A PhD in mathematics – career
possibilities & gender aspects.

1st, June 2021

About Karin Baur:

Karin Baur works in algebra, her research interests lie in algebraic, geometric and combinatorial methods in representation theory, including cluster theory, frieze patterns, algebras of surfaces, tilings and triangulations. After her PhD at the University of Basel, Switzerland, she held postdoctoral positions in San Diego, CA, USA, and in Leicester, UK, before holding a SNSF Professorship at ETH. Since 2011 she has been a professor at the University of Graz (currently on leave) and is now a professor at the University of Leeds. She enjoys having research projects with various groups of co-authors. In recent years, the focus was a lot on algebras and modules associated to the combinatorics of surfaces. Her family has moved countries several times with her during her career.

Talk abstract:
In my talk I will give an introduction to the theory of frieze patterns, a beautiful research area with connections to geometry, combinatorics and algebra which allows to get a glimpse at a topic into a field with a lot of activities.
