"Piecewise-deterministic Markov processes"Aguirre, LeonardoPiecewise-deterministic Markov processes were formally introduced 40 years ago and have since been deployed in several areas of applied probability. While much of the initial work revolved around engineering applications, the model class has meanwhile also featured prominently in the life sciences, particularly in biochemistry, cell biology and, more recently, also in ecological modelling. In this introduction to the mini-symposium I will recall the fundamental definition of PDMPs, illustrate their usefulness for ecological modelling through various examples and give an idea of their mathematical and numerical tractability. This is to establish a common background for the talks to follow which will provide a more in-depth treatment of selected PDMP applications. |
