"Self-organisation in systems of interacting agents"

Many biological systems are formed of multiple agents - cells, fibers, individuals,... - that interact with each other and this leads to large-scale patterns that are not obvious from the agent’s behaviour. Understanding this type of self-organisation or collective behaviour requires models at the level of the agent’s as well as at the level of the population, where pattern formation takes place. It is also necessary to link both levels of description. This opens a broad range of mathematical challenges that span from modelling, macroscopic limits, analysis of differential equations, and simulations and comparison between agent-based and continuum models. In this mini-symposium we will consider different biological systems and different levels of description. The advantage of the mathematical methods considered is that they are typically versatile, i.e., even if they are developed with a particular biological system in mind, they can be easily adapted to other biological systems, making the range of applications very broad. We expect this mini-symposium to foster an exchange of methods and approaches in the mathematical investigation of self-organisation.
