"Emergence of multiscale patterns from population diversity of interaction ranges"

Sontag, Andrei

Population diversity is crucial for the adaptability and resilience of a species in the face of environmental challenges. A genetically diverse population possesses a broader range of traits, enhancing its ability to adapt to changing ecological niches. In this talk, I will discuss how diversity in competition ranges within a population can give rise to multiscale spatial patterns with more than one characteristic spatial scale. Specifically, I will discuss the discovery of purely stochastic multiscale patterns and how metastable multiscale patterns can emerge from fluctuations that excite deterministically unstable modes. Our methodology presents innovative approaches for introducing diversity in the range at which individuals interact within a population, offering valuable insights into more robust mechanisms for multiscale pattern formation and their impact on ecological interactions.
