"Generating mutualisms through branching in subdivided populations"

Flintham, Lewis

Modelling the evolution of coexistence, via branching from a monomorphic population, is a challenging problem. It involves not only knowing the convergence stability of an evolutionary trajectory, but the degree of variance that then builds up once a convergence stable point has been reached. Using an adaptive dynamics framework, we look at how a mutualistic interaction might arise under such conditions, while paying attention to the underlying ecology -which we frame in the context of a microbial interaction. In particular, we focus on interpreting the relatedness coefficients of these models under different partitionings of fitness, before going on to explore what different partitionings of fitness might tell us about the dynamics of these systems.
